FAQ

If you plan to travel to Fairfield by plane, train, or bus, a free shuttle will pick you up at the airport/station and bring you back when the event ends. However, please speak with Bill Hurlin, Director of Visitor Events, before finalizing your travel arrangements. He can be reached at (641) 470-1345 or whurlin@miu.edu.

PLEASE NOTE: Shuttle service is unavailable if your arrival time to the airport/station is after 8:00 PM. If you arrive after 8:00 PM and still want shuttle service to campus, you must spend the night at a hotel near the airport/station, and the shuttle will pick you up the following day. With regard to your departure, our shuttles do not depart the campus before 8:00 AM. If your only departure option is too early, we can drop you off at a hotel near the airport/station the night before, or you may opt to spend an additional night at the MIU Guest & Conference Center ($80 per night, depending on availability) and take you to the airport/station the following day.

Instead of taking the shuttle, you may find it more convenient to rent a car or arrange for a private driver to bring you to campus. A list of private drivers is available upon request.

The best airports to consider are Cedar Rapids (CID – 1 ½ hours from campus) and Des Moines (DSM – 2 hours from campus). You could also consider Moline (MLI – 2 hours from campus). The nearest Amtrak stations are in Mt. Pleasant and Ottumwa (1/2 hour from campus each) and Fort Madison (1 hour from campus). Greyhound offers bus service to Fairfield.

For any additional information, please contact our transportation department directly at: transportation@miu.edu.

See our suggestions for places to stay within a few minutes of campus.

For Visitors Saturdays there is a $10 registration fee. For Visitors Weekends, the registration fee is $55, which partially covers our costs for the following:

  • Organic vegetarian meals in our dining hall
  • Two nights’ lodging in the MIU Guest & Conference Center, single rooms for everyone. (Extra nights before or after the Visitors Weekend are $80 per night)
Travel reimbursements are available for Visitors Weekends only. US prospective students with financial need who are visiting MIU for the first time can apply for a travel reimbursement of up to $350. You can apply for this support when you register for a Visitors Weekend. Prospective students receiving travel reimbursements are expected to attend all events.

Yes, online registration closes at:

  • Visitors Weekend – 4:00 PM Central Time the Monday before
  • Visitors Saturday – 9:00 PM Central Time the Wednesday before

After online registration closes, you can still sign up by calling our Visitors staff at 641-470-1345.

Visitors Weekends and Visitors Saturdays are each held 5 times per year. The next two Visitors Weekends will beOctober 31 – November 2 and April 3-5. The next two Visitors Saturdays will be December 7 and January 18.

Yes, but the schedule of events is very full, and not all events are suitable for young children. It’s best to register someone to come with you to look after your child. Also, if you are staying at the MIU Guest & Conference center, please be aware that quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Please inform us if you are bringing young children with you.

If you’re coming to a Visitors Weekend, then you can learn the TM technique if you arrive two days prior to the start of the Visitors Weekend. (This option is not available to Visitors Saturday participants.)
