MIU’s new Regenerative Organic Agriculture Program (ROAP) gets its face on the local news!
Maharishi International University’s Schwartz-Guich Sustainable Living Center has caught the attention of Getting to Net Zero, an organization that keeps track of ultra-efficient buildings and their energy usage.
According to their calculations, the Sustainable Living Center’s net Energy Use Intensity (EUI) was -0.5 in 2015, indicating that the building produced 5 percent more energy than it used.
Getting to Net Zero said that the Center is among the highest-performing buildings they had encountered, especially given Iowa’s harsh climate.
Mr. S.D. Shibulal, a cofounder of technology giant Infosys, and Mrs. Kumari Shibulal received a Maharishi Award at the 2016 Fall Celebration, at which time they announced that their foundation would be providing scholarships totaling $100,000 for students from India who enroll in the new Regenerative Organic Agriculture Program that will begin in January.

Dr. A. Thimmaiah (Dr. Thim) is a globally respected expert on organic and biodynamic agriculture and an advocate for self-sufficient farming systems worldwide. He promotes a regenerative, low-carbon approach to restoring the health of the earth and producing the healthiest foods for the most people. Through constant innovation and research, Dr. Thimm plays a leading role in the development of programs that support food security, regeneration of the earth, and rural poverty reduction.
Robert Karp, co-director of the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association, and Jim Fullmer, co-director of the Demeter Association, both recently spoke to students in a course on biodynamic agriculture.
Molly Haviland, an MIU Sustainable Living alumna, will be teaching the upcoming Living Soils course this June. Joining her in the class will be David Fisher, PhD and SL Department Head, Loida Vasquez, an MIU alumna and graduate of the Dr. Elaine Ingham method course and Ben Ice, Owner of Ice’s Soil Regeneration in Otsego, MN.
MIU faculty recently had the opportunity to present a more profound view of agriculture at a conference on “The Spirit of Sustainable Agriculture” hosted by Harvard Divinity School.
Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Alliant Energy, MIU will be planting about 100 trees on campus this month, with volunteers invited to help with the planting on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24.
Professor A. Thimmaiah presented a two-day workshop on Biodynamic Agriculture last month in Cissone, Italy, as well as speaking at a school and a university and networking with various individuals and organizations, including discussing internship opportunities for MUM students.
The community makerspace in the science wing of the Library has recently been reorganized and remodeled, including additional tools and the hiring of two highly qualified staff.
