New Study Shows Increases in Telomerase Gene Expression

A new study published last month in PLOS One found that the Transcendental Meditation technique and lifestyle changes both appear to stimulate genes that produce telomerase, an enzyme that’s associated with a decrease in cellular aging, reduced blood pressure, prevention of cardiovascular disease, and reduced mortality.

Wellness Students Learn About Local Staple: Radiance Dairy

Recently, students from MIU’s Physiology and Health department made a visit to local dairy farm Radiance Dairy. This field trip was a part of ‘MAV Diet, Digestion and Nutrition‘ class, where the students are learning how the food we eat can be used to keep the body in balance or bring it back in to balance. There are several products that are considered Sattvic (i.e. promoting purity of mind and body and giving more life energy) in AyurVeda. Cow’s milk and purified butter (ghee) are among them.

Krista Brisbane: Taking Wellness to Dominica

Krista Brisbane comes from Dominica, a small island in the Caribbean that has been named the “nature island” due to its unspoiled rainforest, springs, and waterfalls. I spoke with Varsha Khatri a few weeks ago when she came to Fairfield to visit her alma mater. She is a graduate of the BA degree in Physiology and Health in 2008, and about 3 years ago, she settled with her husband in London—where she was born. There, she began a health practice called Illuminated Health which has become quite successful.
