Jeff Brown, a certified nonviolent communication trainer, recently came to speak at the MIU Sustainable Living center about communicating more harmoniously through the concept of NVC. Communication techniques such as NVC fit into our model of sustainability, which we call Deep Sustainability, because we believe that true, world-changing sustainability must begin within. Tom Newmark, the co-founder and chair of The Carbon Underground, a nonprofit that teaches farmers, ranchers, and corporations how to use regenerative agricultural practices to sequester carbon dioxide and possibly reverse climate change, recently presented a fascinating talk about these important issues. The talk was titled, “The Carbon Underground: A World Movement to Regenerate Soils and Reverse Climate Change”, and took place on April 15th in Dalby Hall, at the Argiro Student Center on MUM campus.
The highly esteemed Ved Nanda, LLM, gave a lecture as a part of the Sustainable Living department’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Monday, May 11th, 2015. His talk was entitled, “Making Peace With the Earth: The Good News and Bad News in 2015“, which took place in the Argiro Student Center’s Dalby Hall on MIU campus. He spoke about current social, political, economic and environmental issues from around the globe, what has been done to make things better in the past, and what still needs to change.
As a part of the MIU Sustainable Living department’s Distinguished Lecture Series, Richard Register, a MIU Visiting Scholar, spoke about his solution for humanity’s environmental problems: ecocities.

Suzan Erem, co-founder and president of the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) will explain how this statewide nonprofit is creating a whole new way to own farmland and “feed the world.”
