I’m unsure where to begin my interview with MIU 2013 BFA graduate Elee Torres. Do we start with his Tasty Buns Patisserie, his avant-garde runway fashions from EcoJam 2015, or “Caravan,” his final BFA Final Show using cloth, paint, thread, wood, and re-purposed objects?
Graphic and fashion designer Jami Johnson works as part of “a tight knit team” for Blue Fish Clothing in Fairfield, Iowa. “I never thought I’d be moved back to a small town in Midwest and working at a clothing line doing fashion design,” she tells me.
The decor for EcoJam was simple: a black runway and large tree branches, painted white, on stands. The clothing was anything but.
Last Saturday night a special yearly fashion show, “EcoJam,” took place in downtown Fairfield, Iowa and some MIU students were involved in putting on the show. Everyone from alumni, current students and prospective students took part in organizing, designing, modeling and attending. Even this month’s MIU Visitors’ Weekend participants were lucky enough to come watch.
