At most universities, when the semester ends, students leave campus to travel and visit friends and relatives. However, last month, 85 graduate computer science students at Maharishi International University chose to stay on campus for an additional 7 days to compete in a team software competition called DevFest 2015.
Last week, 85 Maharishi International University Computer Science graduate students worked in 14 teams which devoted 7 days of their winter vacation to participating in our DevFest 2015 software competition.
Computer science students will have the opportunity to win significant cash prizes by participating in a competition over winter break that will entail creating new tools such as smartphone apps for promoting Maharishi AyurVeda worldwide.
Dr. Robert Schneider is the Director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention, the Dean of the Maharishi College of Perfect Health, and the Director of the MUM Physiology and Health department’s MS in Integrative Medicine, which has recently partnered with St. Martinus University in Curaçao to deliver a dual MD MS degree program for aspiring doctors in integrative medicine.

The first annual Creative Edge Film Fest (CEFF) took place in Fairfield September 25-27 at the freshly renovated Orpheum Theater downtown. The festival provided a new venue for Iowa’s independent filmmakers, producers, directors, and actors to showcase their talents.
Jeff Brown, a certified nonviolent communication trainer, recently came to speak at the MIU Sustainable Living center about communicating more harmoniously through the concept of NVC. Communication techniques such as NVC fit into our model of sustainability, which we call Deep Sustainability, because we believe that true, world-changing sustainability must begin within. On the occasion of International United Nations Day and the UN’s 70th anniversary, Chris Whatley, executive director of the United Nations Association for the U.S., will be on campus October 21–22 to speak at two events as well as lead a workshop on international careers.
John Jolliffe, the executive director of Jim Carrey’s Better U Foundation spoke to Dr. Thimmaiah’s organic agriculture class last week. He talked about how the Better U Foundation is helping farmers around the world learn how to better utilize the tools and skills they have to yield better results and be more sustainable. He also talked about creativity, particularly about a concept known as imaginative intelligence, which is a perspective that he has found to enhance one’s creative potential.
Last weekend, MIU’s Ethiopian community held their largest annual celebration: Ethiopian New Year. Students, staff, faculty, and community members of all cultural backgrounds joined together to enjoy traditional food, dancing, performances, and socializing. Every January and every August is a precious time for all of us here at Maharishi International University. During those months we have an influx of all-new students, whose presence helps make the quality of life on our campus all the more rich and exciting.
