BA in Creative Artsonline or on-campus

Bring your ideas to life across film, writing, fine art, and sound

Most creative work today moves between media. A poem becomes a short film. A podcast becomes a live performance. A sketchbook becomes a gallery show. The BA in Creative Arts is built for the way that work actually gets made.

This Creative Arts degree is organized around five creative competencies that deepen your creativity and expand your range as an artist:

  • Creative Process & Consciousness. Intuition, awareness, creative discipline, and consciousness-based approaches to artistic practice.
  • Storytelling & Meaning. Narrative, structure, and poetic and hybrid storytelling across media.
  • Image, Form & Aesthetics. Visual literacy and composition in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and design.
  • Sound, Language & Voice. Writing, rhetoric, sound design, spoken word, and music as expressive media.
  • Professional Practice & Presentation. Entrepreneurship, personal branding, self-employment and tax literacy, monetization, portfolio development, exhibitions, and festivals.

You’ll also study across three departments – Cinematic Arts & New Media, Creative Writing, and Fine Arts – taking at least one class from each and building a single body of work that draws on all of them.

Customize and name your own path

You’ll build 20 credits of specialization coursework with your Creative Arts advisor, shaped around what you love to make. Then you’ll name that path, and the name you choose prints on your diploma and transcript.

How does MIU develop creativity?

Watch the video about meditating to become more creative, 1 minute and 10 seconds long

Every artist knows the difference between a session where creativity flows and one that feels like pushing against a wall. The difference is the state you’re working from.

At MIU, you’ll learn the Transcendental Meditation technique and practice it twice a day alongside your coursework. Published research associates TM practice with increased creativity, clearer thinking, and reduced stress. For an artist, that’s the raw material.

This is what makes Consciousness-Based Education different from a conventional arts program. You’ll study craft technique and professional practice the way you would anywhere. You’ll also develop the awareness the work comes out of. One full core area of this degree, Creative Process & Consciousness, is built on it: how to work from a settled state, how to stay receptive to what a project wants to become, and how to carry a piece from first impulse through to finished work without losing what made it alive.

Will I learn how to use AI in my work?

Watch the video about where it's at with AI, 1 minute and 11 seconds long

Generative AI now shapes content creation, design, media production, and marketing. Creative professionals are expected to work alongside it.

At MIU we treat AI the way we treat any tool, as something directed by trained human judgment. Prompt design and AI-assisted production are built into the core through courses like AI & Creativity and Creative AI & Prompt Design. You can take MIU’s Applied AI courses as electives, and if you want deeper preparation you can stack the full Minor in Applied AI alongside your major.

The goal is graduates who can use these tools with the editorial control, aesthetic judgment, and ethical awareness that separate professional creative work from automated output.

What are the career opportunities?

Creative employers hire on portfolios. This program is built so that every graduate leaves with one, along with knowledge of the business side of a creative career.

You’ll be prepared for a range of entry points into the creative economy, depending on how you customize your degree:

  • Content creator and digital content producer

Develop and produce video, written, and visual content for brands, publications, or your own platform.

  • Social media specialist or manager

Build and run content strategy across platforms, combining writing, design, and video in one role.

  • Marketing and communications specialist

Bring a full creative skill set to campaigns, storytelling, and brand work for organizations of any size.

  • AI-assisted creative producer

Combine traditional craft with generative tools in production workflows that studios and agencies are actively building out.

  • Photographer, editor, or designer

Concentrate your electives and capstone in a single medium and graduate with a professional portfolio in it.

  • Visual artist or illustrator

Combine drawing, painting, and sculpture with writing, design, and the business skills to make a living from your art.

  • Independent musician, songwriter, or sound designer

Write, produce, mix, and release your own work.

  • Podcast producer and host

Handle concept, interviewing, recording, sound design, and distribution.

  • Arts administration and program coordination

Support galleries, festivals, nonprofits, and arts organizations.

  • Freelance and portfolio creative

Combine writing, design, visual art, photo, video, and consulting into a career you own.

With professional experience or a graduate degree, this BA also lays the groundwork for art direction, producing and directing, art therapy, curatorial work, and K-12 teaching with state certification.

What are the degree requirements?

A minimum of 128 credits is required to graduate with a BA in Creative Arts. This may include up to 90 transfer credits.

The Creative Arts major is 48 credits:

  • 20 credits of Creative Arts Core across the five thematic areas
  • 20 credits of specialization and electives, chosen with your Creative Arts advisor
  • 8 credits of Creative Arts Capstone coursework

Within those 48 credits you’ll complete at least 4 credits in each of the three participating departments and the required course How to Make a Living as an Artist.

Undergraduate degree students may apply transfer credits for up to half the coursework in the major. Transfer credits are accepted for courses completed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Only two courses are required of all undergraduate students

This course is your entryway into MIU and Consciousness-Based Education. We dive into an ancient yet radically new framework for understanding the universe and our place in it. This model holds that consciousness, not matter, is fundamental. With this in mind, we look at some of life’s big questions: How can we develop our fullest potential as human beings? How do art and stories help us understand that potential? How can our own growth help create a more just and peaceful society? What do the world’s great wisdom traditions have in common? How can we improve education and healthcare? The new paradigm we explore in this course infuses all your classes at MIU. In this course, you'll learn the Transcendental Meditation® technique to awaken the full potential of consciousness in your life. Comments from students
    • “I truly had a significant experience every single day in class.”
    • “I’m hesitant to even call it a class; it felt more like a philosophical playground. Not only do I feel like the course has primed me well for the rest of my time at MIU, I feel that the information covered in class will be extremely relevant for the rest of my life.”
    • “It was easily digestible, deeply engaging (edge of my seat in pure focus many days), and incredibly enjoyable.”
Writing is a crucial skill not only for college but for life. Students are required to complete at least one writing course; a second writing course may be required depending on an entering student's skill level.
