Sports and Recreation
Exercise is essential for good health and well-being. It’s especially important for students, who spend much of the day sitting. We make sure that students have ample time for exercise, and we provide a wide variety of options, facilities, and resources.
Recreation Center
The Rec Center is a 60,000-square-foot indoor facility, one of the largest indoor university sports facilities in the state of Iowa. Facilities inside include:
- Running track
- Tennis courts
- Volleyball courts
- Basketball courts
- 28-foot rock climbing wall
- Weight room
- Gymnastics center
- Ping-pong tables
- and more…
Swimming
MUM has an outdoor swimming pool, open June to September, to complement the indoor pool in Fairfield that is open all year long. Adjacent to MUM’s pool is a sand volleyball court, open year-round. Waterworks Park, adjacent to the MUM campus, has a freshwater swimming lake with sandy beach, playground, shelter, picnic area, and restrooms.
Adventure
Eager for adventure? The Department of Exercise and Sport Science offers three-day trips (on weekends between courses). These exhilarating, professionally supervised adventures include:
- Alpine skiing
- Rock climbing in scenic Iowa
- White water kayaking the Wolf River’s
- Cross-country skiing
- Horseback riding
- Long canoe trips, and
- Sailboarding the wide lakes of the midwest
There is also a special camping trip for first-year students held in early September.
Tennis
Six outdoor tennis courts on the eastern part of campus complement our four indoor courts in the Rec Center.
Dance
Dance classes are held in the Argiro Student Center’s dance studio, featuring hardwood sprung dance floors. Dance classes are available in ballet, improv, modern, jazz, aerobics, salsa and other Latin dances, tango, and other ballroom dance genres. Many of these classes can be used for academic credit.
Soccer
There is also a soccer stadium, the home field of the university soccer team. Our players represent as many as 16 countries, and our team has been three-time undefeated champion of its league.
Fairfield Loop Trail
Fairfield’s 22-mile recreational trail system circles the west and north boundaries of the MUM campus, and passes through forests, prairies, woodlands, wetlands, over bridges, and more. It’s popular for walking, jogging, biking, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Cross-country skis are available from the Rec Center.
