In addition to the requirements below for the B.A. in Elementary Education, students need to satisfy the general requirements for a bachelor’s degree.

Option 1: Elementary School Teacher (generalist) (38 units)

• ED 371 Methods of Teaching Elementary Reading and Language Arts (4 units)

• ED 376 Teaching Physical Education — Elementary (1 unit)
• ED 368 Teaching Elementary Social Studies (3 units)
• ED 494 Student Teaching in the Elementary School (18 units)*

Option 2: Elementary School Single Subject Specialist (16 units)

• ED 358 Teaching Specialist in the Elementary School (4 units)

*Some students may be required to complete an additional 4–10 units.

Students who wish to specialize in a single subject should consult the department early in their undergraduate programs to plan to meet State of Iowa requirements for course work in their teaching area and to ensure a position for student teaching.
